Regulating Emotions in our Calm Down Corner

Funded Aug 22, 2023

Thank you all so much for helping to fund my project. This year our district transitioned to a full inclusion model. This means that we have a wider range of student needs entering our classrooms each day. In addition to having students with a wide range of needs I also have a class of 28 this year, which is huge for third grade. The Calm Down Corner has been an amazing addition to my classroom. It helps with class management and teaching students about self regulation. I have one student in particular that has very high needs. He spent the majority of his days for the first month of school in the calm down corner. We've been working really hard to reduce the amount of time spent each day in the calm down corner, and he now uses a three minute timer to reset himself then return to his seat. Sometimes he'll say, "I just need 3 more minutes." This shows so much growth. He's using the tools in the calm down corner and becoming much more able to regulate his emotions and participate in the classroom. Although this means the calm down corner is being used less, it also shows it is serving it's purpose! My students and I are so thankful for your generosity!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ballod
