Later this semester, students in my 11th and 12th grade English class will be taking end of year assessments necessary to graduate. These students have a history of low performance on reading comprehension tests along with low motivation to read. Submersing students who rarely encounter engaging and relevant literature with strong text will not only help expose them to skills that appear on assessments but will also help to inspire lifelong learning habits and nurture a passion for reading. Uncle Tom's Children allows students to learn about plot, theme, characterization, and a number of other vital literary elements through out-of-the-box storytelling. Students in my class have the ability to reason critically, but simply require literature that speaks to their experiences and worldview to inspire them to want to read more.
