My 5th grade students are reluctant and unmotivated to read independently because the chapter books in our class library are on a fourth and fifth grade reading level. The students need shorter chapter books on a 2nd grade-to-4th grade level, graphic novels, and current informational books that will help build the background knowledge that they need to make text connections. Also, I ordered many books in a series or written by the same author so that once hooked, the students will continue to read. The key to breaking this vicious cycle of avoiding reading and therefore becoming increasingly worse at it, is to have students find books that don't intimidate them due to length or reading level. Only then will they find a love of reading for relaxation and eventually learning! Reading is a safe hobby and it gives economically disadvantaged children hope for a bright future. Literacy for all is a right not a privilege!
