  • Off to a Great Start!

    Funded Jul 21, 2020

Thank you so much for the generous donations and helping my students begin the virtual school year off strong. At the beginning of the year, there were many tears shed, by myself and the students! Technology wasn't always our best friend. The part that did help ease the transition was the presence of supplies that each student was able to acquire thanks to this Donors Choose project.

Each student received a goodie bag or tool kit of materials needed to start the year off right. If it were a normal school year, the students would have access to all these items in the classroom. However, this project allowed the items and tools of the classroom to be present in their individual homes. This certainly helped ease the transition and the challenges.

Students use their tool kits everyday! Their toolkits contain important learning tools to keep learning happening. Learning is happening this year, as I see it everyday in my resilient students.

Thanks for supporting learning during these challenging times.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Q.

  • Tools for Teaching During Distance Learning

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

Distance learning sure has brought about a lot of unanticipated changes and challenges. Through the support of Donors Choose and the amazing donors who chose to donate to this project, I have been able to take on these challenges. I can't imagine teaching from home without the ring light, post-it paper for anchor charts, and more.

With these tools, learning has continued to take place in my classroom. So many have worried, as have I, about the loss of learning during these times. However, with the proper tools and support, I have been able to continue to witness the magic of learning in my virtual classroom.

Thank you to all that have supported this project. You have supported learning in a very challenging time and it it much appreciated by my students and me.”

    With gratitude,

  • Let's Get Flexible

    Funded Jun 14, 2019

My students LOVE their flexible seating options. Positively behaving students are allowed to choose their flexible seating option. Thus, the seating provides students with a reward for positive behavior. The lap desks and wobble cushions are a great addition to the classroom.

When my students first saw the materials, they were so excited! They all wanted to try out the flexible seating options. Now, students always use these options and do a great job taking care of the items.

Overall, these seating options have helped provide my students with increased amounts of choice and responsibility. Furthermore, it allows students to choose a seat that they know will help them be their most productive selves. Thank you again for your support!”

  • The Time Is Now

    Funded Nov 28, 2017

Thank you for donating the Time For Kids resource. This year, our district switched to a new English-Language Arts curriculum. The new curriculum was very difficult for the students to keep up with. Because of this, the Time For Kids resource provided students with articles and readings that were relevant to their lives, which we could build English-Language Arts lessons upon. Students used the Time For Kids to stay up to date on relevant, current events and build their English-Language Arts skills. The articles often served as a basis for the students' essay prompts.

The students always enjoyed the Time For Kids readings because it always included interesting articles that the students actually wanted to read. Some of the articles even sparked some great STEM challenge ideas! One of the cover articles focused on waterslides and the science behind waterslides. After reading the waterslide article, my students completed their own STEM challenge where they had to design and engineer their own waterslides using only empty toilet paper rolls, popsicle sticks, and tape. This activity proved that the Time For Kids not only served as an excellent English-Language Arts resource, but also a STEM one.

All in all, the Time for Kids helped make the students to read articles and stay up to date on current events. The magazines also lent themselves to connect English-Language Arts with STEM challenges. The Time For Kids showed students that reading doesn't always have to happen as a subject on its own, but can be connected to other, interesting subjects as well. Thank you again for the donation, my students absolutely loved reading each new magazine.”

  • Dive Into a Good Book

    Funded Aug 31, 2017

As a first year teacher, with a week's notice of a position before the start of school, I panicked because I had no chapter books for fifth grade readers. I did not know any teachers who had extra chapter books to spare from their own classrooms. Thanks to your donations, I was able to supply my classroom with different leveled reading books for the various students in my classroom. The students use these new books during their independent reading time. A lot of my students do not have a lot of time to read once they get home, since they spend many hours on the bus to and from school each day. Therefore, your donation helped provide my students with interesting and differentiated reading books for independent reading time. So far this year, these chapter books have allowed my students to learn about main idea, theme, and dive deeper into the study of characters and characterization.

In my classroom, reading is an enjoyed task. Students engage in independent silent reading during their "rotation station" time. The students are allowed a free-choice work space during their reading time, so that they can get comfy and begin to see reading as less of a dull task and more of a fun, leisurely activity. Everyday students read in order to build their reading stamina. They try to focus on reading for a certain amount of time and beat their previous recorded stamina time. All in all, reading is a fun, celebrated activity in my classroom.

All of the students enjoy the new books. I have noticed that a number of my avid readers especially enjoy the new books. Often my avid readers finish their library books before we have had a chance to return to the library. As a result, they head to our classroom library, filled with the books from your donation. This has allowed them to continue their reading practices and not get bored by easy or uninteresting novels.

Thank you once again for your donation and the support of my students' education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Q.

It is important for students to learn about current events in order to help them become informed citizens and community members. The students are informally exposed to news through the internet and television. My aim is to bring in TIME for Kids in order to allow them to explore and analyze the news content themselves, in order to form their own informed opinions. This subscription will help my students explore and increase their knowledge of the world around them. TIME for Kids will help the students carefully examine nonfiction literature that directly relates to their lives, as citizens of a global community
