This past year, I have been incredibly inspired by my students. One young man, so advanced in his studies that he assists his single mother in her work at the local college, perseveres despite the hole left in his heart by his absent father, a drug addict. Along with him are several other future doctors, lawyers, and scholars who deserve Ivy League opportunities, but languish for the lack of any Advance Placement courses. On the other hand, I have several students that regularly break my heart. They are hard working, capable of learning, and extremely respectful. However, because of the often dysfunctional classrooms they've been schooled in, I have ninth graders that read on a second grade level. Inspired by the right books and individual attention, I've seen some of them grow two to three years in reading, an absolute denial of any suggestion that the blame for their academic underachievement lays with them.
