My middle school library is truly the largest classroom on campus where 550 students are encouraged to read, think, create, and collaborate. A few donated Legos and a store bought Spirograph set was enough to demonstrate our students’ innate curiosity and creativity last year. These supplies for a new Maker Space Center will provide opportunities for students to explore a growth mindset as they use independent thinking, communication, and problem solving. Students will be allowed to learn beyond the tradition classrooms that stress concepts and facts and focus on cross disciplinary learning where student interest is the focus and driving force. Currently, the Maker Space Center is the most popular activity space in the library. This project will provide materials for students to create stop-motion videos with Legos; tinker with electrical circuits; write, direct, and edit videos with green screen technologies; record 360 degree settings for campus tours and digital work displays; use engineering and construction skills to build working K’Nex structures; and provide sound equipment to improve demonstration videos that share the processes of their learning. When you choose to support our Maker Space Center with supplies, you will be encouraging my students to be makers, creators, and innovators regardless of their socio economic status in this world. I believe that my students are no longer consumers of knowledge. Maker Spaces naturally inspire active participators who become producers of knowledge.
