There are two major challenges that effect my students when it comes to language arts: the first problem is grammar. My students, with hard work, can become great readers, analyzers and synthesizers of information. However, there is a major deficit when it comes to grammar. Because this is usually considered less of a challenge at the high school level, we have limited resources that will provide the type of instruction that they need, without being too elementary for their grade level. These handbooks will allow each group of students access to a great resource they can use when writing, revising and editing their works. They will also allow me to structure lessons around activities within the book. Coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds, the majority of my students do not have access to computers, which is unfortunate considering that in order to pass their Language Arts Florida State Assessment, they are required to type an essay into a testing platform. Therefore, even if they can compose and write a passing essay, it means nothing if they can't properly type it during testing. Our school has limited computer labs and even an occasional trip to the media center is not enough to prepare them for being successful. The wireless keyboards will allow each group of students to type into the digital component of our curriculum, to contribute when we are creating class essays and to respond to questions as a class. Essentially they will have daily practice with typing on the computers. As an educator of my district, I make a commitment to prepare my students for college and career success after high school. Effective communication through proper grammar, as well as, computer literacy are two skills that will continue to benefit my students well into their adult years.
