We Read to Know that We're Not Alone
Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you so much for your generous contribution to my classroom library. The new books that I was able to purchase have been flying off the shelves. My students seem to be particularly drawn to the adventure, mystery, and graphic novels this school year. City Spies and Double Vision have been some of their favorite new series to read. Having a wide variety of high-interest books for students to read is the first step in increasing independent reading practice. When students read more, they do better in all other facets of life.
Thank you again for your help and support to keep my students engaged and interested in reading.”

Funded Oct 10, 2020Thank you very much for your generous donation to purchase a class set of Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix of the National Book Award-Winning Stamped from the Beginning by Jason Reynolds. Reynolds said it best, "This is NOT a history book. This is a book about the here and now. A book to help us better understand why we are where we are. A book about race."
It is such an important book to be read in all schools. I am very grateful that Jason Reynolds adapted it for young readers from Ibram X. Kendi's book Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, whose award winning book opened my eyes to a new way of looking at American history. I wish that I had been able to read a book like that when I was in middle or high school.
I have not been able to teach this book yet due to COVID, but I have worked very hard to create the curriculum for the book so that once we return to school I will be able to teach it to my students.
I sincerely appreciate your generous donation to help me have an important dialogue and learning opportunity with my students about racism through reading and learning a different perspective on not only world history, but on American history.”

Funded Dec 18, 2019Thank you so much for your generosity to make sure that my donor's choose grant was funded. When I opened the box of puzzles and stacked them on the back counter, my students were so excited. They think that the puzzle board the coolest thing ever. Now puzzle pieces don't accidentally end up on the floor. The four drawers are great for sorting pieces by color.
Classroom communities are so important. When students feel like they are part of a community, they are much more likely to become active participants in the learning environment. Whenever I think about being a part of a family or community, I think about holidays spent around a kitchen table working on puzzles. The feeling of accomplishing a 1000 piece puzzle over the course of a weekend or holiday break is both rewarding and satisfying.
Our brains are hard wired to want to solve puzzles and that's what makes solving a puzzle so enjoyable and relaxing. Simply put, puzzles are a great tool to bring people together at any age.
I know that many of you may be wondering when our students would even have time to work on puzzles since we are busy learning each and every minute of our class period. Since our students are expected to work hard and focus during the two period core class, I give them a four minute "brain break" during the passing periods between our two period core class. This is when many students will gather around the back counter to work on the puzzle. You'd be surprised how much students can accomplish in their four minute break!
My school has major focus on addressing the social and emotional learning (SEL) of our students. These puzzles will help to support our classroom community and will be a large contributing factor to the betterment of our class community and emotional support.
Thank you again.”

Funded Nov 5, 2019Thank you so much for your generosity to make sure that my donor's choose grant was funded. When I opened the box of puzzles and stacked them on the back counter, my students were so excited. They loved looking at the images and were deciding which puzzle to choose next. They are very interested in putting together the 1,000 piece puzzles and are excited for the challenge.

A Child Who Reads Will Be an Adult Who Thinks
Funded Dec 19, 2014The books you purchased for my students arrived last week - all five boxes of them! My students had a hard time containing their excitement as the books were unpacked. They couldn't believe that they had been donated to our classroom just for their reading pleasure. They gravitated to the books like moths to a flame. They were picking up books, looking at the covers and letting me know which books the would like to read once they finish the book that they are currently reading. Overall a palpable feeling of excitement.
I have added these books to my classroom library for students to check out. They are flying off of the shelves. I am also doing weekly book talks on the books to generate more interest. Since I ordered multiple copies, many students are able to check out the same book and talk about what is happening as they read. It is really cool to overhear my students' lively discussions based on their reading.
By giving my students so many choices in what they read, I know that they will read more. As I know from experience and I can validate with research, this will result in student improvement in reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, thinking, empathy, and overall knowledge. This in turn will help my students be successful in high school and college, as well as in their future careers.
Thank you so much for generously funding this reading grant. You will not only be helping my current students, but you will also be helping my future students. Good books are always the gift that keeps on giving.”

Classroom Electric Hole Punch
Funded Sep 2, 2010Thank you so much for donating an electric hole punch for my classroom. It has been a welcomed addition. The students enjoy using the hole puncher to make holes in their papers and it has been a fun way to help students clean up their binders and to get organized.
I have seen many students use the hole punch over the last few months. It is so important for students to be organized and able to keep track of their papers. Thank you so much for donating the hole punch!
