As a preschool teacher of many years one of my favorite experiences is watching my students develop their imaginations through dramatic play. Every single day I get to witness students enter a world of their own, cooperatively playing alongside their peers to explore families, businesses, career opportunities and more. I've watched them put chairs together to design a spaceship or a moving van. Take turns being the Mom, Dad or baby. Pack up their purse or bag to "go to work" after dropping their babies at day care. They act out the responsibilities of community helpers and set up restaurants, doctor's offices and salons. Through this play they learn about the possibilities for their futures and the significance of the people and community around them. These materials will help develop their imaginations even further and give us, as teachers, the opportunity to dive deeper in encouraging community and career play. And they will help encourage social emotional growth by allowing students to discuss their families and to work cooperatively with one another.
