Education for Immigrants Children and Parents
Funded Sep 10, 2017Subject: Request for a Smartboard and Laptop for adult classes
We, the undersigned, declare that we are educators certified by the city and state of New York. Furthermore, we affirm that we are united by the interest of selflessly helping young adults who have recently arrived in this country so that they make their way through the educational system and can build a better future for themselves and their families.
Our team is made up of three teachers, two lawyers and several community activists. We will teach free classes in English, citizenship, and preparation for the GED exam. Likewise, we will offer free workshops on immigration, housing, and how to navigate the complex network of services offered by the New York municipal government and various nonprofit organizations. Our students, for the most part, are adult immigrants. They come from different regions of the world, with Latin America and Africa being the ones that contribute the greatest number.
These immigrants, after several years residing in New York City, have recognized the importance of obtaining a degree that accredits them as adult high school graduates here in New York City. Your only option to improve yourself is to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma (GED) here in the United States. For these purposes, we consider it an essential priority to use modern teaching methods that allow us better instruction for them. Therefore, we have considered asking them to give us an electronic whiteboard (Smart Board) and a Laptop. With this equipment we could, not only, facilitate teaching; but, in addition, tune them with cutting-edge technology to accelerate their insertion into the area's labor market.
We feel hopeful because we know your altruistic capacity. For that reason, we are confident that the generosity of this institution will provide us with the tools we need to teach, train and empower these new members of our Society to be successful citizens in this country.
