Having a common working space within the first grade classrooms will create an atmosphere that fosters collaboration, relationships, and student engagement. The commons area will go between my classroom and my teaching partners classroom. The two futons will be facing each other to encourage dialogue between students. On the ends will be two rounded chairs to complete the circle of communication. My teaching partner and I will also be purchasing a rug and a coffee table to add to the homey feel and create an area for learning. While it is our job as educators to teach children, we are not the only teachers in the classroom. Our students possess knowledge, that when shared with their peers, equates to more learning for all. Having a comfortable space in which students are able to collaborate in will be the first step for nurturing an academic environment that supports a community vibe. Research has proven that when students have a sense of belonging in their learning environment, they are more apt to be academically motivated and engaged. By having this common seating area between the first grade classrooms, we are building community ties within our grade level. Our students often derive from disjointed families who may lack a sense of belonging. In our classrooms, students will intrinsically understand that our learning environment is a family who gathers together to learn, share, and grow.
