If this project is funded I will be able to run an after-school flat pattern-making club which will allow students to draft up patterns for skirts, bodices, sleeves, collars, and pants before sewing them in muslin. Students will use mathematics and learn to use a variety of tools with precision while fueling their fashion designer dreams! Students will meet once per week after school for an hour. We will begin the course by drafting the basic skirt sloper, either for students' own measurements, a friend's, or a standard industry-sized model. From here students will learn how to move darts and manipulate the sloper to add volume (i.e. flared skirt, circle skirt), pleats, ruffles, gathers, godets, style lines, etc. We will then move to creating and manipulating the basic bodice sloper, before learning to add a variety of sleeves and collars. As a teacher with a background in the Arts I am a firm believer in the power of an Arts curriculum in school; as a current Math teacher I can think of no better form of art that combines both fields in an accessible way.
