As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, I plan to provide an environment in my classroom that gives my class a place where we can come together to grow as a community. It is my primary job to build relationships with my diverse group of students. We start our day with a Community Circle and yoga to become more mindful, to clear our minds from any life distractions, so we are ready to learn. With this project, I will provide my students with an area where we can meet in a large group. Given my students’ ever changing and challenging lives, it’s more important than ever that my classroom create a sense of community where they can learn and grow to their fullest potential. My students thrive in an environment that is safe and comfortable. The sense of community and routines they learn at school will give them skills that will help them to be successful in life. My classroom is currently a tile floor that isn’t particularly warm for students to sit on. With this large rug, my class will be given a comfortable space to work as a whole group and to help form a classroom community. The large carpet will be used for daily morning meetings, read aloud, and other large group activities that promote community and build relationships as a class. Additionally, this carpet will be the central location for whole-class instruction. I look forward to seeing my students grow individually and together through a space that promotes positive relationships and a supportive community.
