Because You Can't Dissect Without Dissection Kits...
Funded Aug 30, 2010My students have loved the dissection kits. They have been using them all year and the kits have added so much to every dissection. I remember back to last year when my students were continuously distracted by the terrible equipment they were using and how they mangled and destroyed many of the more delicate specimens. This year during the brain dissection they were able to see the most delicate structures and appreciate the intricacies of the brain. It's a beautiful sight to see their excitement shine through. Thank you for your generosity.”

There's Nothing Better Than A Kid Who Wants to Learn More
Funded Apr 28, 2010The day I received the books, I told my classes about the generous donations. They were amazed that a group of strangers would be so generous as to give to a class of students they don't know. I said to them, "People think that you and your education is so important that they gave their hard earned money to support you." I could see a lot of them really take that to heart and think about how important their education is. I doesn't happen often that a high school student really steps outside their education and looks in on how important it is, not only to their own happiness and success, but also to the success of others. It's such a cliché to call children the "future of America" and the "leaders of tomorrow." What you've done is give them a tangible example of someone (a stranger, no less) believing that those statements are the truth.
Another fantastic thing that you have done is give my students a sense of philanthropy that is so often overlooked. It's hard to teach kids that they can make a difference because they so rarely see a "regular" person performing an act of philanthropy. The acts that we see and hear about are the million dollar donations from a company to some huge foundation. This act of kindness that you have shown will go a long way in teaching my students how to make a difference because they will believe that they can.
The books have already been checked out and are being read right now. They have until the end of the year to finish them and from what I can tell right now they are thoroughly enjoying them. I have at least two kids a day coming up to me before class to tell me about something they had read about in their book. It's exciting for the kids but, I admit, it is just as exciting for me.”

The Amazing Brain Library
Funded Feb 2, 2010It is just wonderful that you believe in science education so much that you have decided to donate to this cause. Once I told my students that the books had been funded they were flabbergasted that complete strangers would donate so much money to this class. I think that this is one of the best parts about this process. Not only do you enrich the education of these kids by providing them with these wonderful books, but you are also instilling them with a sense of philanthropy that I think many of them have never had before.
The first day of having these books available for check out, literally every one flew off the shelves. 16 out of 16 are checked out with a waiting list 22 names long. I'm not offering extra credit for reading these books, these students are reading them on their own accord! Thank you for allowing my students the opportunity to be exposed to these wonderful books.
With the budgets in California looking the way they do, you are the only way that we would be able to have access to materials like this.”
