The Dry Gulch Gazette, AHS's campus publication, has been absent on our campus for several years and this group of hardworking students is very excited to bring it back! They just wrapped up a 3 day summer camp and are ready to hit the ground running on their first issue from the very start of the school year. These students are quite literally starting from scratch...there is no journalism class, no camera equipment, and no dedicated student media space in the school. While they are the kind of students who will "make do" and find a way to get the job done, I would love to be able to give them access to some of the resources many high school journalism programs across the country have and a high quality DSLR camera seems like an excellent starting point. Journalism is an opportunity for these students to grow as writers, artists, photographers, editors, thinkers, but most importantly as young people who view themselves as capable community members with agency. One thing we have emphasized throughout the process of starting up this program again is that journalism is NOT "just a school project". They are producing real work for a real audience. They are holding themselves to the standards of professionals and it would fantastic for them to have the resources to match.
