Access to engaging stories is so important to starting off these kids' school experience on the right foot! Students are not always sure they will have fun or do well in school. They may have heard negative stories about school, or just be nervous to be away from home. By adding a cozy and interactive listening library center in with our other books and teacher read-alouds, we can get kids excited about learning to read! At the beginning of the year, kindergarteners aren't able to read on their own. Many of our students come in not knowing their letters. They need to hear stories read aloud by different voices, and learn how to turn the pages and interact with the pictures as they follow along. Adding to my collection of books on tape and CD--and providing the technology for the students to access it--is the way to get them involved, and excited about stories, right from the start. The tape and CD players will be used with the recorded books I already have, as well as the new ones I am requesting. These engaging stories will get them excited about reading. The students will have the opportunity to listen to the stories and follow along during center time. We will use the rechargeable batteries in the players, since we are working to become a magnet school with the theme of sustainability.
