As a math teacher, I feel that hands-on learning is very effective. Although I do lots of group activities while we're learning, it is also essential for each student to have his/her own copy of an activity. We need a printer and ink to make this possible. It is so hard to get copies for the classroom because of the shortage of supplies at my school. The students can write ALL of their work down, but that creates other problems. They either can't see the board or they write so slowly and usually never completes an assignment. Parents want to see what their children are actually doing in the classroom. Hard copies of quizzes and daily activities are vital to the success of the student. Documentation of daily work is mandatory for parent/teacher conferences. Because many of my students aren't equipped with the basic supplies such as pencils and paper, I like to provide them with their own copies. Having individual copies help them to feel a little more independent and encourages them to work on their own. I also like communicating with my parents by sending out memos about what is happening in our classroom. These memos allow me to share information about standards, homework, specific needs for their child, and other important things that will help the parents help me to be a more successful teacher for their children.
