This project is being created so that we can have more books/novels, that are relative to the students I teach. Many of our students are Hispanic/Latino and we need to have literature they can relate to. We honor many different cultures, nationalities, traditions, throughout the year, and we love learning about them as well. With the start of the school year we will be honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. One way we will be doing this is by honoring the authors that have contributed to adolescent literature. My goal is to meet the students where they are, and that includes reading levels as well as reading interest. We currently do not have a vast selection of Hispanic authors in our school, which removes students' choice of which books they will like to read. This also turn students off to reading because they feel as though they don't have a say in what they are reading. In order to improve the frequency of reading we need to build a better Hispanic author or protagonist library. Students will have a rubric, and a project following the reading of these novels to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. They will have to dig deep in the reading of the novels for comprehension and to help them develop their reading capabilities. They will have great literature circles, and academic conversations about these stories. I can't wait to listen in on them.
