  • Readers Going to Read

    Funded Jul 23, 2021

First of all, thank you thank you donors. My students were very excited to receive their books. Especially with all the health guidelines, our classroom library is still not open for student use and this makes it even more special that students are getting their own books. Reading in our classroom is different. Students before used to work productively on their work to be able to read in the library and sit on the cute lawn chairs or rest on the emoji pillows while they read. We still read at our seats but its not the same.

Before we went on Winter Break, I did read a few of the books as short and fun read alouds at the end of the day and the kids loved them. Some books we engaged with a bit more through social emotional activities. For example, we read "How Full is Your Bucket?" and talked about being kind.

When we returned from Winter Break, I gifted all the students two books for them to keep. We brainstormed places and ways to keep their books safe at home and they even wrote their names inside the books. When I told my students that the books were for them to keep they were so shocked. Many of students bring their books in their backpacks and read them at recess. I heard other students bragging to their classmates about their books. They are taking so much pride in having their own personal books that as an educator I love to see. Thank you for your donations, they make a small difference in many little lives.”

    With gratitude,

  • Spark the Joy of Reading

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

I cannot express all the gratitude I feel. Your donation will definitely be appreciated by my little learners and their families. My students love to read but lack books at home. Now my little readers will have more books to add to their little libraries at home. Thank you so much!”

  • Nuts for Non-Fiction

    Funded Oct 25, 2018

All my 24 book loving students are eager to read and ready to learn through reading. The nonfiction sets I received were Level H and Level J. We have read these books during guided and I use them to teach students about nonfiction texts and its characteristics (table of contents, glossary, diagrams, etc.) Reading nonfiction also helps students build their comprehension in reading. It is often hard to learn about nonfiction texts when nonfiction texts are not as easily accessible especially for guided reading. Having these books has definitely helped my students build comprehension with nonfiction.

Independent reading is hard to squeeze into our busy day, but I try to make time for at least 20 minutes everyday because I know many of my students don't read at home. I love watching them become so focused on their books, tuning off their surrounding. The leveled nonfiction books were mainly on animals, which is generally the area of focus for younger students because they love animals. The Piggie and Elephant books, are and will continue to be the highlight of our classroom library. The students LOVE those books.

The Piggie and Elephant books are so funny and easy to read. They are especially enjoyed by my students who struggle with reading and tend to shy away from books. They are mainly made up of CVC words and sight words, therefore the repetition is beneficial to building fluency of sight words. In addition, these books help build intonation because my students need to change the rise and fall of their voice to follow the punctuation and context of these stories.

Once again thank you so much for your donations that were able to make my project come to and for all the joy you brought to my students through these books.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ramirez
