My first grade students continue to be victims of the Flint Water Crisis; which has contributed to long-lasting, life-altering effects on their cognitive and emotional health. Lower IQ, learning problems, slowed growth and the inability to pay attention are all consequences of lead in their water. Research shows that the impact of lead on children can impact their cognitive and emotional health and well-being. Flexible seating will greatly benefit my students as well as address their social, physical, and academic needs. Instead of students sitting at traditional tables and chairs, envision some students using wobble chairs at their tables, slightly wiggling and bouncing; while others are on comfy floor seats or sitting at lowered tables. A few friends are on soft seats, using clipboards to collaborate. Another group utilizes the stack stools during small group instruction. Kids are actively engaged because choices and movement are encouraged in their learning environment. As a result, I want my classroom to meet the needs of all students, by providing them flexible seating choices. Current research has proven it is detrimental to children's physical and mental health when they sit too long. Children need and deserve alternative seating when they spend over six hours a day, five days a week in a classroom. Flexible seating allows children choice and movement to optimize and engage in active learning.
