Students tend to struggle with abstract concepts, most notably fractions. There are some students who just can't wrap their head around the concept of partial numbers at such a young age. There are times that I have to give the students multiple opportunities to view fractions and these tools will allow me to help those types of learners. Kids love math manipulatives and I want to help my kids love math. There's something about dry erase boards that kids love and when I use them in my classroom, my students are actually eager to participate in my math lessons. Half the battle is getting the students to buy in, so having these manipulatives would be a great help in achieving that most difficult of chores. The Magnetic Base Ten set will give the kids an opportunity to see numbers in action. We can use these blocks in a variety of ways for both whole numbers and decimals later on in the year. The fact that they are magnetic is awesome because I can turn what was once previously wasted space (the backs of my library) into an interactive learning center. They can then transfer those skills into a center that is built around the Write and Wipe boards. Those boards will provide a very relaxing opportunity for my class to do their math practice, away from the pressures of answer questions in a whole group setting. I want my class to be able to get their practice in, but to do so in a way that removes stress from their lives. These materials will allow that to happen.
