In the desert just outside Las Vegas, my 3rd graders learn when they have the classroom materials they need to succeed! As a STEAM Academy, science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics are at the core of everything that we do.
My 3rd grade students represent a very culturally diverse population which has been greatly impacted by the effects of interrupted learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
They are hardworking children, in spite of the fact that over half come from low-income and working-class families. The majority receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast.
In our 3rd grade classrooms, students are excited to learn to think outside the box through STEM/STEAM projects and home-school connections. We love seeing their curious minds at work, and they are always thinking of new questions and ideas to share with the world. The opportunity to integrate technology-based educational tools for all subjects allows them the opportunity to be innovative while encouraging self-motivation and enriching learning strategies. Simple additions to our classroom like personal headphones and chair back organizers provide students a clean, safe, and personal way to organize their materials without sharing and spreading germs.
Our 3 grade classrooms have been hit hard by the impact of interrupted learning that has occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results have left our students struggling significantly in two major areas: social-emotional situations and in learning to read by grade 4. Combined, these impacts affect all academic areas. Our classroom needs more non-fiction, diverse, and lower level books to meet the needs of our students this year, and into the future, as we work on our RF.3.4 Fluency and comprehension standards to bring our classroom up to the reading level they would have been at, had they been able to attend school in person.
