With the specific set of students I serve in my classroom, they are very fidgety, and need different opportunities to get their wiggles out while still completing tasks. They enjoy control, and like to be in charge of decisions that have an effect on them. Flexible seating gives them the ability to control their seating choice, but still complete their assigned work tasks. Whether they want to work on the ground, bouncing on a ball, or sitting on a stool instead of in a chair, these students deserve the opportunity to make that choice. A giant yoga ball will allow them to be able to be moving but stay in one spot. They will also be able to work on some core muscles by balancing on the ball. This will also improve their posture which in turn can improve their handwriting. The stools will give my students the opportunity to sit higher and rely on their own core muscles to sit up straight instead of relying on the backs of the chair. Floor desks will come in handy during projects done on the carpet with no desks nearby. Currently we are using clipboards, but managing materials and using a clipboard is a daunting task for my students.
