Learning Through Play!

Funded Oct 25, 2024

This project has been amazing for my students. They are learning social skills, while strengthening their literacy skills using these games. This is one of their favorite parts of the day and all 23 students get to participate. I include a game rotation in our literacy centers each day. This is away from the computers. The students enjoy it and it is really building not just content skills, but speaking and listening skills which is a school goal for us.

Students are doing a significant amount of phonics and spelling with many of the games that involve word and letter manipulation. Games like Wordle and Boggle which require them to think about sound and letter patterns. Games like Scrabble and Hangman have also helped them to think about the best ways to put letters together to form words. Synonym Splat, Charades, and Scattegories have helps them with vocabulary. The several sequencing games have been a huge help for the students to order events and think about transition words. I also received a box of grammar folder games which is helping develop common conventions. The best part is that the students are developing these skills while having fun and not even realizing that they are learning.

Secondarily, in a school with a large population of MLL students these games have been invaluable in helping students participate in authentic speaking and listening while using academic discourse.

This has truly been a gift for my current students and will continue to be a boon for future classes. Thank you.”

With gratitude,
