There are many reasons a student may struggle to focus in class. Their family might be experiencing stress that makes it hard for them to get basic needs met. They may be distracted by strong feelings or memories of trauma experienced in the past. They may have trouble solving conflicts with peers. They may just be wired to have high levels of physical energy that make it hard to cope with sitting still. The tools I am requesting will help students develop skills to cope independently with these life challenges. The balance board, trampoline, and fidget toys will be used by students who need a break from learning in our Wellness Center. Meeting physiological needs and getting sensory input helps students calm their brains and bodies to better focus on learning. The conversation dice will help students develop stronger social skills, supporting them in their ability to connect with peers and solve problems independently. The deodorant will be provided to upper-grade students who do not have the ability to buy personal hygiene items independently. Beanbag chairs will be used to give students alternative and soothing seating choices when they need cool down time from class.
