BEMS operates with a token economy system to reward students who practice our four B’s -- Be Kind, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Safe. At the beginning of each year, students are explicitly taught our behavioral expectations. Then periodically throughout the year and when needed the most, the staff reviews and re-teaches the expectations. In addition to clearly teaching expectations, the staff recognizes and rewards the appropriate behaviors of students in an effort to change more undesirable behaviors.
The currency for our token economy is dawg bucks. Students can then redeem their dawg bucks for incentives and privileges during the school day. All students in our buildings are positively impacted by this program as it serves as an incentive for good character and behavior. Students are able to use “dawg bucks” to purchase items from our Dawg Store based on their preferences and interests. Tickets to sporting events, pop sockets, gift cards, gum, stress balls, and putty are popular items. In December our Dawg Store transforms into Santa’s Shop where students can use their hard earned currency to purchase holiday gifts for friends and family.
For the first time this year, we utilized digital dawg bucks and our kids and teachers loved it! Instead of working with cumbersome paper dawg bucks that require reams of colored paper, hours of labor copying, cutting, counting, distributing and maintaining, the digital dawg bucks go directly onto the students ID badges via a staff member's cell phone or computer. This digital solution has really reinvigorated our PBIS program that began at BEMS back in 2009. We are hopeful that funding will allow us to continue to digitally inspire our students to great behavior.
