The majority of my students are non verbal so we rely heavily of Picture Exchange Cards (PECs) to communicate wants, needs and objectives. For instance- we use visual schedules for each student to facilitate smooth transitions throughout the day. We also use PECs at snack and center time for students to indicate their choices and foster their independence. Each student is different and presents us with new scenarios so that we are printing PECs cards almost daily. Since our school is unable to provide colored printers or ink, we have purchased our own printer, but struggle to keep up with the expensive cost of toner. We also find that a thicker lamination pocket works better to prevent students from bending and damaging key signs with daily use. For many children who qualify for the SPED program, crafts, projects and lessons that appeal to as many senses as possible are key to learning. In addition to our use of PECs cards which help us to combine the visual and auditory facilities, we place a large emphasis on tactile experience. We do a lot of painting, bubble play, crafts and music oriented learning.
