Special Education students bring more to the classroom than we know. I have seen them laugh, cry, and become angry because of the many challenges they face socially and academically. So many of "my kids" think teachers dislike them because they are always "getting in trouble". This in turn makes them dislike school and makes it hard for them to stay focused. We actually love them! and want to make the classroom more welcoming. Flexible seating, quality audio, and colorful learning materials will help students focus and motivate them to keep trying. Many students are reprimanded uncountable times a day for fidgeting, being out of their seat, and otherwise losing focus. They already come to the room with ADHD and other learning issues. Then we force them into little desks and give them black and white papers to look at all day. By providing seating options and color printouts, we can help them help themselves. I want to provide a classroom where they can get comfortable with a book and harness their extra energy for learning. Many students benefit from audiobooks; however, ear buds are uncomfortable and go missing daily. I am requesting headphones that will live up to the stress of 8th graders and be comfortable enough to encourage reading for a length of time. The more my students can settle in and focus, they more chances they will have to succeed.
