Students learn best when that learning is hands-on and done in a comfortable and safe environment. In my classroom, we use The Daily 5 model to direct our literacy instruction. This includes a Word Work center. Working with words is so crucial, especially in first grade where they are expected to make great gains in literacy. Using a hands-on material, such as the Play dough and letters, allows for the students to actually create their words in that center. In order to be comfortable in your learning environment, seating that is comfy and allows for movement is essential. Lastly, variety in seating is essential. I want my students to be able to have a chair or the wobble seat if it will help them focus. In order for the classroom to be a true learning environment, it must contain all the necessary materials for student's to feel capable and successful.
