I have a very diverse classroom filled with busy kindergarteners. More than half of my students receive free or reduced lunch and at least half of the class are English Language Learners. My students typically come to me with limited literacy skills. Reading is not something that happens often in their homes and quite often I hear "I don't like reading." It is my job to change that and get my students excited about reading. Through read alouds, shared reading and reading workshop, I flood my students with great books that are engaging and rich with language. One of my favorite authors is Mo Willems. The students fall in love with his humorous books and are highly motivated to learn to read because of his books. When looking for a new carpet to place in my classroom library, where all my reading instruction happens, I fell in love with a Mo Willems carpet.
