In a time of such uneasiness and conflict in our world, reading "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio, about a young boy with a facial deformity that delivers a powerful message about the importance of kindness, tolerance, and acceptance is needed now more than ever. Since my class is Inclusion & contains readers ranging in levels from 1st grade to tenth grade, and English Language Learners (ELL), this highly accessible novel could change the entire landscape of my classroom. Struggling readers will feel successful & more experienced readers will benefit from the powerful message this novel conveys. They will continue to support their peers in the journey of becoming better readers and critical thinkers. The beauty of a novel such as "Wonder" is that it is beneficial on so many different levels, yet not intimidating for struggling readers. My students need to discover that they can and will be successful if they were given the right book. Countless research shows that finding students the "right" book can make them not only become better readers, but hopefully continue to read in the process. Please help me to create a classroom unit using "Wonder" that will teach my students so much about reading, but even more about how to be a good person in an ever-changing, uncertain world. Help me to show them that acceptance & tolerance is necessary & that the generosity of others is always astounding. Thank you!
