My 1st grade students would greatly benefit from hands-on STEM materials. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education creates critical thinkers, increases science/math literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. STEM education promotes 21st century learning. I am super excited to see what my students will design, create, test, improve, and learn! The students will use the following items to build structures: Bristle, Castle and Foam Blocks, Peradix DIY Soft Building Sticks, Klikko Model Building Set, Play-Doh, Magnetic blocks and many other items. The students will be asked to build structures such as 2-D and 3-D shapes, bridges, vehicles, boats, slides, houses, buildings and mazes among other things. The students will be asked to make their structures taller or wider, to hold weight or to be useful. The students will use problem solving and critical thinking to improve their structures by reflecting about what worked and what didn't work and then to try to make it better. These STEM materials will be used during guided center time and project based learning units. We will use the plastic bins to keep all the STEM materials organized and help eliminate lost pieces. Also the disinfecting wipes will be used to help keep the pieces sanitary and to prevent the spread of germs!
