I am creating this Breakout-style game to help students use the Latin language skills they are learning. By setting a scene in Pompeii from our textbook, the students will feel immersed in the culture and history of the era. Latin students will be solving riddles, ciphers, and puzzles leading to their escape from the temple and Vesuvius's destruction. They will use Latin language skills as well as problem solving strategies. In the format of this game, there will be pressure to work together to solve the problems. Students will literally unlock the past by solving riddles that spell words and give numeric codes to open the locks we have requested. The statues and locking book will also help them feel the culture by creating the look of the temple. Eventually, the students may create their own breakout puzzles as a challenge to each other and future Latin students. Real world (type) problem solving is a critical skill for high school students to master.
