Imagine sitting and teaching in a classroom and trying to concentrate when the temperature is well over 90? Add in not having any technology in the room to engage students into state mandated curriculum while trying to help them meet standards and prepare for college. Our school is on the North Shore of Oahu and many of my students are determined to be prepared for college in whichever way possible. They want to get 4.0's, play sports at the college and professional level, serve missions in other parts of the world and make their families proud. I was a first generation family member to attend college and sympathize with my students and their family financial struggles as I have my own to deal with. I am a second year teacher who transferred from a school district that supported technology and supplied it for both students AND teachers in their classrooms to a school that barely had enough working laptops to give the teaching staff at the start of the school year. As valuable as the traditional methods of learning from the past are, P-15 needs access to current instructional trends that utilize technology to also support students. A television with a large screen would help display the visuals I want to present to students when going over curriculum. I would also like to play them podcasts, clips and other media to supplement material that otherwise would not engage them if we just stuck to the reading our Springboard books. In order to pull students into the content they are learning, a teacher needs to design instruction to center around areas of interest for their students. Please help us get these tools in our classroom so we can stay caught up with the times!
