At the end of this past school year, my students swore to me that chemistry is just the study of math. However, I believe chemistry is more than various mathematical calculations. Chemistry is the basis of life and explains the everyday experiences of my students. As a teacher at an underserved and high needs school, it has been difficult to obtain the resources my students need to feel confident in chemistry. With the help of calculators and hands-on activities, my students will be able to better connect calculations to concepts. They can use calculators to improve their computation skills and solve math problems efficiently. With a strong understanding of math, students will then be able to visualize the law of conservation of mass when balancing chemical equations and perform various chemical reactions using their stoichiometric calculations. With your help, these new classroom resources will provide the platform of understanding that my students require to connect chemistry to their real-life experiences. I also plan to have my students read the popular Hidden Figures book and guide them to see that stereotypes and financial opportunities do not limit their ability to become future scientists and leaders of their generation. As a class, we will understand that science is not restricted to one demographic. Additionally, my students will see the connection between the sciences and the humanities. The Hidden Figures book will be a year-long project that promotes growth, confidence, and resilience in my chemistry classroom. Education is all about equity and providing students who are worthy of a quality education with the resources they need to succeed. My students deserve the opportunity to pursue careers in the sciences and your support can allow this to happen! We are greatly appreciative of your time and cannot wait to learn more!
