My students are innovative learners, thinkers, and doers and my goal is to foster that every way possible! They learn best when they are not confined to a chair and desk, they think freely when they feel free, which means we do A LOT of learning on the floor! Since so much learning takes place in unconventional places, we need a dry erase board that can travel with us! With that being said, we also need more dry erase markers! If you are a teacher or know a teacher, you probably know that dry erase markers are much like socks! They seem to disappear at THE MOST inconvenient times! My students also NEED to see AND do what I teach them! Since we are learning in so many different places in my room, they need clipboards to put their papers on!
Lastly, my classroom is in desperate need of more chapter books! Unfortunately, because my students are so far behind in reading, unlike their peers, they struggle with reading books. They wouldn't even dream of reading a chapter book, they think they CAN'T do it! Can't is NOT a word in my room and since this is a skill they struggle with, I bring my reading abilities to them to empower them and give them something to be proud of! Once a month, with each reading group, we read one chapter book as a class! I read the book, we talk about it and I teach them how to answer written comprehension questions! Listening and learning from these books empowers them to become better readers and gives them a book to talk about with their peers! It makes them feel "normal" which is a word that these kids have not been able to relate to for most of their lives!
