My students need these high interest low complexity books to engage them in the reading process. I teach Reading in a inner city middle school which serves a population of students that come from the worst forms of poverty. Throughout their school years, many of my African-American students struggle with their own personal identities. They also generally lack the confidence that they can succeed in college (if they dare to go). I'd like to incorporate the books into my classroom teaching. Not only are the books of high interest, but they have been deliberately chosen to be culturally responsive for my students. They are written at reading level which would enhance both my students' reading and critical thinking skills, and they will also help students contemplate their own identities and develop their sense of social awareness. The books serve as a spring board for discussions among students as they evaluate their value systems and consider the treatment of others. Using the novel in my classroom will foster hope, inspiration, and character-building in my students. Every donation brings my students closer to fulfilling their individual promise--a better future for themselves and their families through education.
