Learning spaces should be student-centered and there is not one learning space that fits the needs of all students. Students should be given a choice in how they learn best. Flexible seating allows students communicate, collaborate, create, problem solve, and participate in critical thinking experiences. I believe student collaboration is essential in preparing them for an ever-changing world and flexible seating is critical in helping the collaborative process. I am requesting items like stability balls and wobble seats for students who may struggle with sitting still and may be more productive with a chair that allows some movement! In addition, I would like to lower some of my tables and have an option for students to sit on the floor. The floor seats that I am requesting will allow students to sit on the floor comfortably. The large area rug will be beneficial for students who may prefer to lay on their stomach while reading. All of the items that I am requesting are also portable and students can move their preferred seats to work in small groups when collaborating with each other. These are a couple of different examples of how the flexible seating will be used and helpful within my classroom. My classroom is more like a family and I want my students to enter my classroom and feel at "home" and be able to choose a comfortable spot that meets their individual needs. I want to set my students up for success and one way to do so is by offering flexible seating options.
