I believe changing my seating arrangement to flexible seating is in their best interest for learning. Being adolescents they no longer have recess time but their growing bodies need the opportunity to stretch, move, and be comfortable. Sitting for 7 ½ hours a day is no fun for anyone, especially teens that are ever eager to move around.
My students are full of energy, anxiety, anger, excitement, and growing bodies, this is hard to keep behind a desk all day long. Kids work better when movement is incorporated. My students love to move around, having alternative seating arrangements will make them more comfortable, which leads to better engagement and learning. When students are comfortable they are able to focus more on the task at hand.
I envision a classroom where EVERY student can find a place that fits their needs on any given day. In addition to traditional desks, students can choose from stools, standing desks, bean bags, lap desks, short tables where they can sit on a pillow on the floor, even a floor mats and clipboards. The items I am requesting will allow my students to do this, they can sit or lay on the carpet during independent reading, sit in a bean bag chair with a clipboard as they brainstorm for writing projects, rock on a yoga ball at a short table during work time, some students prefer to stand -the desk risers will give them that option, the table and stools can be used for small groups. All these items give my students choices when it comes to their learning, when students are involved in making decisions about their learning, even in something as simple as where they sit, they become more invested in their learning.
