A top priority of mine as a teacher is to develop lifelong readers. Every day in my classroom reading will be encouraged, yet one day a week will be allotted specifically for fostering a reading community. On this day students will present book talks each quarter (and I will share my favorite reads, too!). Students will have time for independent reading--any text of their choice--to build reading stamina, vocabulary, and text connections. Also, their reading will be platforms for writing and discussion activities. While students read, I will make observations about their reading habits, conference with individuals about their reading and writing, or read a book of my choosing, too. Reading alongside students shows that I am a lifelong reader like they are. The books chosen for my project come from the 2018 Abraham Lincoln Readers Choice List. Providing these books for my students will give them the opportunity to participate in the Readers Choice reading program sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association. The Scholastic magazines will mainly be utilized in my Global Literature class to encourage reading widely and to practice skills for informational text. However, these magazines will be available to other students, as well. Lastly, to house all of these awesome pieces of literature, my students need a sturdy bookshelf to keep our materials organized and easily accessible.
