To differentiate instruction is to recognize students' varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning and interests; and to react responsively. As an educator, I have taught students of many different backgrounds, and cultures. I teach in a extremely rural high poverty district with a high number of ESL students; many have never been outside our surrounding counties. Explaining the world and making connections to these students is challenging because of their minimal background knowledge and language skills.
