Individual Math Kits for Distance Learning
Funded Aug 7, 2020Thanks again for donating to my math project. We have been working remotely with all the materials I was able to purchase due to your donations. It is important for young children to have materials in their hands to manipulate as they work through mathematical ideas, as they problem solve, and as they struggle to make sense of new ideas. We have used pattern blocks to make designs, to create shapes, and to sort and count. The beautiful felt balls were used to as a tool to count forward and backward, to make patterns, and to think about combinations that make 10. I like to combine art and math and the paints, notebooks and other materials purchased support that endeavour.
Forever grateful!”

Young Scientists Need Tools in Their Hands
Funded Aug 16, 2020Thank you again for donating to my Scientists Need Tools in Their Hands project. I was able to purchase butterfly cages for each of my students so that they could raise a monarch caterpillar while learning at home. This is a project I have done for the past 20 years and I wanted this group of students to experience the joy of rearing a monarch to set free and you made it possible. This project supports the life science standards and so much more. Each week we check out the Monarch Watch webpage to see where our monarch might be now. We talk about the migration path along the east coast as the monarchs make their way to Mexico. We sing songs, work on math skills of estimation and counting and experience empathy when a monarch experiences a misfortune and cannot make the long journey.
Thanks again for supporting the next generation of scientists!”

Funded Aug 26, 2020Thank you again for donating to my game creation project. Because my students and I are working remotely I wanted to support learning through play by getting games into all our homes. Giving my students the opportunity to design and create their own games has been a great way to do this. So far this year we have created two games. The first game we created was a very open ended path game. The children all came up with their own theme and with family support they all succeeded. The second game was a collection game. Again the kids choose the theme and used various materials from the game making kit you helped to provide to design and create their game.
Parent involvement, mathematical thinking, the design process, and the social emotional benefits of learning to win and loose while playing games are all benefits of this project. We will continue to make games throughout this school year. Giving children choice and ownership of their learning makes learning fun and more engaging for everyone. Some of the themes covered in our games so far include Squirrels gathering nuts, Halloween, the Titanic, Penguins, Hamsters, Batman and Monarchs on their way to Mexico.”
