All children deserve and need to be surrounded by quality and varied literature from their earliest days of life. Unfortunately, there are many little ones out there who don't have that privilege due to family situations. Many of my students are kids such as these; kids who are born into deep poverty with parents or grandparents who are often unable to afford simple needs of life, let alone the luxury of book purchases. Our community does not offer a public library, and the nearest library charges an annual fee for residents outside of the county (my students and their families).
My project will immerse my students in the joys and pleasures of top-notch fiction and nonfiction books, expanding on their literary knowledge, enhancing their daily language arts learning, and delving them into the imaginative world of literature!
Because I firmly believe that educators, the ones in classrooms day in and day out, are the best creators of curriculum, I have purchased a unit that will encompass all aspects of ELA in my class. The curriculum uses 40+ different titles of literature to teach everything from main idea and summarizing to nouns, adverbs, and synonyms. My goal is to expose my students to as many genres and authors as possible while teaching them every ELA skill they need to know in order to be successful and ready for the next year.
My students need a class set of quality and varied literature that will be used as a springboard for discussion, writing, grammar, comprehension, and reading skills for our Rooted in Reading ELA curriculum. I have requested books like Stellaluna, Each Kindness, and Koala Lou.
