Although many people consider math to be the ‘universal language’, the problems on the state Algebra exam are written in dense academic vocabulary and require extensive problem-solving skills. Despite this, 80% of my students last year were able to pass this exam as a result of their tenacity, perseverance, and countless hours put into tutoring outside of school. Passing this exam is required in the state of Texas to obtain a high school diploma, so it is crucial that I do everything in my power to make sure that students can reach their growth targets.
This year, I need to be able to provide my ESL students with the technology to support learning English and Algebra at the same time by integrating research-based practices grounded in multimedia design. In order to do this, I am asking for a class set of tablets. To make sure that I would be prepared and properly trained to use the tablets I am asking for most effectively, I spent my break time this summer taking graduate school courses at Southern Methodist University focused on multimedia lesson design for educators.
Specifically, these tablets will be used for mathematics and English app-based software in addition to integrating inquiry-based lessons and activities. By giving my students a more hands-on, technological approach to their lessons, I can better support them in mathematics and English skills. Additionally, they will hone important technological skills that will support their growth in higher education. Finally, by utilizing technology for student-based assessment and data collection, students will receive feedback that is instantaneous and specific to what they need to work on individually. With this support, I hope that 100% of my students will be able to pass the state exam this year, while also building their confidence and appreciation for mathematics content.
