Five-year-old students cannot sit still-- nor should they be expected to! When students try to control their wiggles, they are wasting all their energy on trying to stay still rather than the engaging and meaningful task at hand. They try so hard to sit still that they miss out on learning. My goal this year is to implement flexible seating. This may mean that students will be sprawled across the carpet with a clipboard, or underneath a table in a cozy spot, but sometimes students like working on a table. These stools allow students to rock, twist, and turn. These are natural movements for children; they try these movements while sitting in regular chairs, which is not safe. These stools allow them to move as they learn in a safe way.
