Students will explore what kinds of social injustice there are in the world and then more specifically, what social injustices are surrounding their home city - New Haven, CT. Students begin to discuss with others what causes social injustice and how they impact individuals and society as a whole. The requested book helps students learn about social injustice as well as leadership because the main character is a Native American, living on an Indian Reservation. He begins to realize that his chances of success are slim if he remains going to the school on the reservation (which has limited resources and disinterested teachers who do not believe in the futures of their students). Junior, the main character, makes the decision to attend the all white school at the edge of town. Despite the adversity that he faces, he overcomes and achieves his dreams. I will be adding an updated photo of my classroom soon. This is my first year teaching so I have only entered the classroom once over the summer. I look forward to decorating it and making it a hub for inspiration.
