I teach K-5th grade in a hands on, science exploration class. I started a 5th grade Science Exploration Club last year that went brilliantly and the students were so engaged and involved in the activities and in pursuing more science as they progressed into higher grades. We spend the fall having speakers from a variety of sources both local and from UF University on different aspects of science in the real world. Each speaker also brings a hands on activity to supplement their lesson and the students keep journals to reflect on what they learned and questions that they would like to explore.
In the spring we will be doing a club experiment from beginning to end based on testing different aspects of agriculture. The previous year we tested soils and variations of squash plants to see which ones produced the best and the healthiest vegetables. Then we wrote up our experiment.
