This project has one goal: to get engaging, diverse books into the hands of my English Learners to help break the cycle of low literacy. I have partnered together with the school librarian to carefully select around 60 books that are age-appropriate and high-interest for high schoolers but are between a 4th and 9th grade reading level. (The average reading level of our advanced EL students this year was a 5.7 grade level.) We will use these books constantly in my classroom for independent reading, student book clubs, and whole-class discussions throughout the school year. I will sort these books into an attractive, genre-specific classroom library from which students may borrow any book at any time. With easy access to high-quality books, it is my hope that every one of my students will find that book that makes them say, "Wow, this is incredible! Maybe I don't hate reading after all."
