The use of interactive notebooks and data binders is a daily activity in my classroom. This year I am starting a new interactive math notebook. In these notebooks, my students will have the opportunity to not only take notes in the conventional way, but take them in a fun way. Students will be creating Thinking Maps, foldables, colorful charts, etc. My students are very hesitant when it comes to learning math but they love showing their creative side. I have found the more I introduce topics through the arts I am allowing them to see Math in a different light. By being excited about what they are creating my students become confident in learning new materials. These notebooks then become a great resource for them to be able to go back to different topics and review. I truly believe that the students must not only see how to solve a problem but also record it in order for it to stick. In my classroom, we also have Quiz Fridays. The use of Data binders allows my students, as well as their parents, to track how they are doing through out the marking period. When my students are not able to come to class prepared due to financial restrictions, they are not motivated and often times feel self-conscious.
