Inquiry based science is an important aspect of understanding the natural world and scientific investigations. I have found that my students respond to hands on inquiry science of growing, cultivating, and observing several species throughout the year. The supplies including living Planaria, Brine Shrimp (Artemia) and Water Bear would hopefully be raised and kept for future use. These items can be shipped throughout the year as we explore cells, genetics, organisms, and ecology. Without these items, students cannot explore the inquiry part of science. In my 18 years of teaching experience, students learn better when they have manipulative group activities to explore living organisms. Due to a lack of these items, the course becomes a virtual lab class (which is great too) but is far supported with a lab experience for these high school biology. Students collecting data, asking questions, and exploring living model organisms allows them to utilize that science is a way of knowing about the natural world. The experiments students can now explore with these project resources will make this high school biology class come alive. Using these living organisms students will conduct inquiry based science experiments gaining science practices and apply them to college and career.
